Cairns backyard wedding photos – Carissa & Ben

Cairns backyard wedding | Gordonvale wedding photos | Cairns photographer

There’s no place quite like home.

Home – in this case – is the house where Carissa and her family grew up – nestled beside the sugar cane paddocks of Gordonvale, with the pyramid standing tall across the fields, and the mountains encircling them.

So it was perfectly fitting that Carissa & Ben’s wedding day took place on the back lawn – underneath the shade of the trees.
These trees must have some stories to tell – they’ve overseen the lives of some beautiful humans.

This was a really special wedding for me – because 12 hours earlier, our little daughter was born. I came straight from the hospital to start shooting, on the biggest emotional high I’ve ever been in my life. Because Amy was (obviously) unable to be there shooting with me, I was lucky to have our friend Patty Lagera fly over from New Zealand to give us a hand shooting weddings over the few weeks window of baby’s arrival date.

One of the things I noticed throughout the day was the way these two set each other off laughing – a small tease turns into a funny response, turns into full body laughter. It’s a beautiful dynamic to see – joy really is one of the most incredible emotions.

After their beautiful ceremony led by the ever-amazing Tammy Barker, we headed out for some photos with the bridal party nearby. We were treated with some beautiful golden sunlight streaming across the cane fields, and a beautiful orange sunset.

As the sky faded into dusk, the marquee lit up against the night – and the party kicked off. I have to give a special shoutout to Carissa’s special recipe of savoury / curried nutrigrain – it was the most more-ish, delicious thing (I enjoyed it so much that I needed to get the recipe off her!).
One of the funniest moments in the speeches was Ben – thanking everyone apart from Mother Nature (because the few days leading up to the wedding had been super wet & caused plenty of stress). No sooner had he said “at least it didn’t rain today though” … that boom – the skies opened and the sound of rain on the marquee roof was the most perfect alignment of fate you could ever hope for!
It worked out well though – because it was just a quick passing shower – but enabled us to catch a cool sneaky rain photo to wrap up the night, I love the way the raindrops pop out in the backlight.

This is just a tiny preview of the many, many photos we captured on the wedding day – enjoy!
