Mikaela & Paul were married at Kur-Cow Barnwell Farm in Kuranda … a venue that, until they mentioned that was where they were getting married, I didn’t even know about!
The day I headed out to have a look (typically, on my motorbike) it was pouring with rain … so while I got to see the lay of the land, I had to imagine how things would look once the sun was out.
Amy and I were both shooting, which is always fun and gives a cool dynamic (check out the back-to-back first kiss shots from opposite angles!) … and just means we have two sets of eyes on everything throughout the day.
We chased the sun from paddock to paddock through the location photos, finishing up on the hill underneath a cool solitary tree. I looked at this tree outlined against the sky & thought ‘wow – imagine how rad this would look with the sky filled with stars’. I suggested to Mikaela and Paul that if (touch wood) we had a starry night sky – it would be totally worth revisiting this same spot.
The reception kicked off with some hilarious speeches, and as the main meals were being served I headed out to assess the star situation … it was looking insane! So I headed up to the paddock and spent a good 15 minutes playing with various different angles, exposures, and focal lengths – trying to get the perfect framing of the tree with the Milky Way in behind. Once I had it set up, I didn’t dare move the camera … so I just left it sitting there in the long grass on the tripod while I headed back into the reception to find Mikaela & Paul … we were ready.
Once we got into the field, all I needed to do was find the camera again & set up a couple of flashes to light up the tree & light up them.
From there, it was all in one long exposure – capturing the stars and popping flash to light them up inside that. We shot only 4 frames total – and I was convinced we had nailed it!
We headed back inside the reception, where the first dance kicked off & everyone partied on into the night. This is just a little sneak preview of the day – if you want a slightly more extended version, you can check out the slideshow at the end.
The star photo definitely worked!! It’s one of my favourite wedding star photos of my career, I think.
Enjoy this little taster of how the day looked 🙂
