Tablelands wedding photographer – DIY barn wedding

We are full on into the swing of the NZ wedding season here – escaping the hot Cairns summer!
But in the interests of keeping everyone up to date, sharing another cool wedding we recently shot here.

Dasha & Taylor first met with us about two years ago – with a pretty ambitious plan. They wanted to build a barn, entirely by hand, as their own wedding venue. Naturally, this piqued our curiosity – these two young, hip snowboarders, just casually pitching such an ambitious idea.

So rather than just capture their wedding day, we decided to head up and periodically photograph some of the process involved in building this venue of epic-ness.

Before long, we ended up building a great friendship with them – catching up for multiple dinners / drinks – and even lending a hand in the building process ourselves. (my hammering skills still leaving much to be desired).

Before we knew it – the wedding day had arrived. The barn looked amazing – the result of so much hard work, and every single spare moment spent up there working on it.

It sat perched in a field of wildflowers (of course!) – and just down the road there were some caves to explore. Throw in the best first dance we’ve ever seen in more than 500 weddings, plenty of laughter and tears – and you have one stunning wedding.

Taylor’s Dad even learned half of his speech in Dasha’s native Russian – as you can imagine, there were many tears!
At the very end of the night, we noticed that the amazing barn they’d spent so much effort creating was empty of people (who we all down at the tipi, dancing up a storm) – and instead, just filled with fairy lights. What better than to wrap things up with a couple of romantic shots inside the barn.

This is just a little sneak peek of their story, as it unfolded on the day. Enjoy.
